The governors' role is not about fundraising, neither it is about cheerleading for the school - though governors might do both those things. School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the head teacher and are involved in the appointment of other staff. It is governors who hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, and it is governors who work with the head teacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources.

Each individual governor is a member of a governing body, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing body. Decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing body.

The role of the governing body is a strategic one; its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school

  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives

  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives

  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives

  • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)

Almost anyone over 18 years of age can become a governor. There are no particular qualifications or requirements, other than a willingness to give time to the role and a capacity for working with other people. If you are interested in becoming a Governor at All Saints CE Primary School, please contact us.

Term of Office: 26/11/2018 - 25/11/2022

Committee: Teaching and Learning

Responsibilty/Interest: Modern Languages

Nature of Interest: Parent of children in school

I am lucky enough to be mother to three amazing children who now all attend All Saints School: boy/girl twins in Y3 and a boy in Nursery.  I currently work as a childminder in our home.  My own qualifications include a Psychology BSc and a PGCE in primary education.  I have over 12 years teaching experiences in primary schools in England, and international primary schools in both China and Vietnam.  I am a trained children’s yoga instructor, with experience in leading sessions in preschool settings (I am currently running sessions in Nursery).  I have all up to date qualifications for childminding, including paediatric first aid and a current DBS certificate.

My other interests are playing the African drums, reading walking our dog, and cooking.  I myself am a lifelong learner and love to acquire new knowledge or test new ideas.  My husband is a primary teacher too, and we regularly discuss the latest research or trends in child development.  I go on courses when I can, and have attended sessions on Safeguarding, British Values, ‘Narrowing the Gender Gap’, Data Protection, and the development of phonics.

For me, preparing young children for life is one of the most important jobs there is.

As a governor my role is to provide a link between staff and governors as well as giving a staff perspective on issues discussed. I enjoy actively participating in making decisions about the school’s future and helping move the school forward. I aim to use my experiences from the day to day workings of the school to form a balanced opinion about each issue.

I am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to help in supporting this wonderful school. I hope to use my personal and professional skills and experience to support the school in moving forward.

Kate Bainbridge

 Category of Governor: Parent representative

Appointing Body: Elected by parents

Term of Office: 01/09/2017 - 31/08/2021

Committee: Finance and Property Resources

Responsibilty/Interest: Literacy, Year 4

Nature of Interest: Co-opted Governor of Thackley Primary School, Bradford

My name is Kate Bainbridge and I have been a parent governor since Summer 2013 and am a member of the Finance and Planning committee. My little girl, Hettie has just  thoroughly enjoyed the time she has already spent as a member of the Otley All Saints family. The school does a wonderful job in facilitating children in their learning within a caring and nurturing environment.

I have been a primary school teacher at Thackley Primary School in Bradford for 10 years, where I currently work 4 days a week. I am in charge of Marketing, Communication and Events at the school and teach my Year 3 class 2 days a week. I am also a staff governor on the governing body at Thackley Primary School. When I am not working at Thackley I am an Account Manager for Education at a PMD Creative Solutions , a marketing company based in Baildon.

I believe my experience of working with children in Primary Schools enables me to provide the help and support a school requires from a governing body. I believe education is about every child reaching their full potential and want our children to look back on their time at Otley All Saints with many happy and fond memories.

Kate Barraclough

Category of Governor: Foundation Governor

Appointing Body: PCC Otley Parish Church

Term of Office: 20/02/2016 - 19/02/2020

Committee: Pupil and Personnel

Responsibilty/Interest: Child protection/Looked after children, Extended Services Steering Committee, Year 3

Nature of Interest: Parent of children in school

I have two children at Otley All Saints and I am a Foundation Governor. I have worked with children and young people since leaving school in various settings and I have a keen interest in promoting the pastoral care of children in schools.  I value the support and teaching the All Saints are giving to my children.

I sit on the Pupil and Personnel Committee and I am the designated governor for Child Protection and Looked After Children, a role that fits well with my job.

I juggle parenthood and work and in my spare time enjoy getting out and about with the family and friends. I love doing crafty things with the kids – what we lack in talent, we make up for in enthusiasm!

I would like every child at the school to feel valued as an individual and prepared for the next step after All Saints, whatever that may be.

Pam Beck

Category of Governor: Foundation Governor

Appointing Body: PCC Otley Parish Church

Term of Office: 20/02/2016 - 19/02/2020

Committee: Teaching and Learning

Responsibilty/Interest: Music, Mathematics, Year 1

Nature of Interest: Former staff member

I was a teacher in and around the Otley area for over 30 years, retiring from All Saints Primary School in 2006. Being a music specialist, I continued my involvement with music at All Saints, firstly by continuing to run the orchestra which I had established when the Primary School opened in 2002. After handing that over to Mr T. in 2008, I continued to assist and to play the piano. My active involvement in Amateur Dramatics with Yeadon A.O.D.S. leads me to be interested in the School productions and I have continued to play the piano for these and for the celebration services, both at school and in the Parish Church.
As a life-long member of Otley Parish Church, assistant organist  and a member of the Parish Church Council, I took the opportunity of standing for the position of a church nominated Governor at All Saints when this arose. I am now in my second term of this appointment and greatly appreciate the opportunity to strengthen the links between the school and the parish church and to encourage mutual support. In addition, I am grateful for the opportunity to maintain my friendships and connections at All Saints and to keep abreast of developments in education. I am currently the Governor connected to Numeracy and Music in the school curriculum and I enjoy seeing how these subjects, in particular, are being enjoyed and worked at in school.

Allan Boddy

 Category of Governor: Foundation Governor

Appointing Body: PCC Otley Parish Church

Term of Office: 01/09/2018 - 01/09/2022

Committee: Member of all committees, Appraisal/performace management

Responsibilty/Interest: Chair of governors, Assessment, History, Year 6

Nature of Interest: Grandparent of children in school

My name is Allan Boddy and I worked as a history teacher at Harrogate Grammar School until 2002 when I retired from the post of Deputy Head.  On retiring I vowed that I would never have anything more to do with education but I was first persuaded to become a Foundation Governor and then Chair of Governors at All Saints.  I have no regrets.  It has been and is a delight to be associated with such a friendly, innovative and successful school as All Saints.

For my own part, I believe in state education and wish all children were educated in state schools.  I believe schools should share responsibility for all aspects of a child's development - physical, spiritual, moral, personal as well as academic.  I believe schools should be ambitious for children and make them want to reach for the stars.  All Saints does these things and I am happy to play a part in its development.  I am also delighted that two of my grandchildren are safe in its hands.

 Category of Governor: Parent Representative

Appointing Body: Elected by parents

Term of Office: 24/09/2017 - 23/09/2021

Committee: Planning Committee, Pupil and Personnel, Appraisal/Performance management

Responsibilty/Interest: Vice Chair, Chair of Pupil and Personnel, Science, Year 6

Nature of Interest: Parent of children in school

I have three children at the school from Year 1 to Year 6 so I am really in it for the long haul!
I started out as a Parent Governor but this lead to becoming the Vice Chair of the Governing Body and Chair of the Pupil and Personnel Committee. I became a Governor to be involved in the education of my kids. Being a Governor gives you such a fantastic insight into the running of the school and all the hard work that goes in by everyone into educating our children in a such friendly environment.
It is such a good way for any parent to be involved with the school, but our main role is to act on the parents behalf as a 'Critical friend', to help support the school and to act as link between the parents and the school. I have found the role very rewarding and feel priviliged to be so involved with the school.
If you are thinking about becoming a Governor, I would really recommend it, you wont regret it.
I am an Environmental Consultant with over twenty years experience of investigating and cleaning up contaminated land sites or 'I dig holes and look at mud' according to my family.
I coach at Otley Zebras where our main goal is to get kids to enjoy their rugby and to carry on playing as they get older.

Committee: Planning Committee, Teaching and Learning

Responsibilty/Interest: Chair of Teaching and Learning, SEN, Year 5

Nature of Interest: Parent of children in school

I first became a Parent Governor in 2009 and have two children who have attended Otley All Saints. I am the Chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee as well as being the SEN (Special Educational Needs) Governor.  I recognise and appreciate the excellent work All Saints does and wanted to give something back to help maintain these high standards.

Working as a local Primary School Teacher I fully appreciate the importance of a good education. From my day job I can bring to the governors my experience of the education system. I aim to support our children’s learning journey from both of these perspectives and contribute in any way possible.

 Category of Governor: Co-opted Representative

Appointing Body: Governing Body of Otley All Saints Primary School

Term of Office: 12/02/2015 - 12/02/2019

Committee: Teaching and Learning

Responsibilty/Interest: Art and Design, Year 1

Nature of Interest: Parent of children in school

I have been a governor for about a year now and am a member of the teaching and learning committee. My children have both been given a great start in education by All Saints. I have found the experience of being a governor very educational (groan!!), it has really helped me to develop a much greater understanding of the challenges and pressures which face schools generally and our school and teachers specifically. It has been an eye opener to see what the teachers are required to do and also hugely reassuring to see the attention to detail and rigour with which they do it. Being a governor allows me to feel more involved in the school and provides me with a means of raising my ideas and concerns and those of other parents.

I am a working parent and have been a Mental Health Nurse in the NHS for 20 years,  I have worked with in-patients and in the community, in managerial roles and more recently providing therapy. I currently work as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist for Leeds Community Health providing CBT to people with anxiety and depression. In my spare time I help out with the PTA, try to keep my allotment under control, enjoy camping and heading up the Chevin with the kids and heading to the pub afterwards.

Appointing Body: Governing Body of Otley All Saints Primary School

Term of Office: 05/02/2019 - 04/02/2023

Committee: Finance and Property Resources

Nature of Interest: Parent of children in school

I was delighted when both my children were accepted to attend this school because it has such a great reputation and a lovely, welcoming atmosphere.

I have worked in the finance sector for a number of years, and currently work for a finance company who invest in spinout companies from Universities.  I head up a team who provide corporate governance and background administrative support to these early stage companies.  These responsibilities have provided me with core business skills and experience such as analysing data, managing finances and budgeting, dealing with staff grievances and strategic planning which I would love to be able to use to support the school.

I became a governor because I am keen to understand and be involved in the schooling of our children and the community we live in.

Having taught in schools in Doncaster, York and Harrogate, I came to All Saints in 2007 after five years as head in Pateley Bridge.  I have found this to be a delightful school to be part of, with wonderful children, supportive families and committed staff.

I am proud of the way the school continues to improve and develop.  We are very fortunate in the support we receive from governors and the church.

I am particularly keen on music, and enjoy singing with York Opera and supporting the musical worship at St John's Church in Harrogate.
